Making A Bespoke Home Office Desk

We recently embarked on an exciting project to create a large, bespoke L-shaped desk for a home office in London.

For the build we sourced beautiful Wych Elm from the Scottish Highlands that was full of character, warmth and beauty. To do this beautiful wood justice, we kept the desk top clean and expansive, trying hard not to distract from the mesmerising nature of the grain. We added a raised monitor unit at the back to declutter the surface, with three hand-cut dovetail drawers and an inlaid, hand carved ebony handle. The bottom of the drawer features beautiful elm burr.

The standout feature of this desk is the parametric wave walls that adorn the exterior of the desk. This sits on top of more beautiful elm burr. We were very fortunate with the weather when it came to carving this wave panel, as we could set up shop outside. This allowed us to see how light bounced off it and where shadows were forming. Here’s a picture of Sean in action!

To further declutter the workspace we built hidden storage units into the back and side of the desk, tucked away discreetly behind the wave panel. Underneath, we made a bespoke cable management system ensuring cables were out of sight and safe from any accidental knocks. One of the challenges we faced with this desk was the small issue of getting into a basement home office. We decided on a modular approach, where the desk can be broken down simply into seven sections, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly.

The name is dedicated to where we sourced the beautiful elm from. The River Evelix runs through Sutherland Scotland and Wych elm grows in water rich soils and flood planes, often growing along rivers and streams.

The desk was a real joy to make and we are so happy with how it turned out. The desk now is in a home office in a beautiful home in South West London.
