Sean was delighted to be interviewed and featured in a recent issue of the Furniture and Cabinet Making Magazine (Issue no.319). This magazine ‘focuses exclusively on fine furniture, reporting on the latest trends and styles from around the world’. The feature written about Sean dived into the very beginning of our journey and what drives what we do: from where the inspiration for our furniture comes from:
‘Sean gets most of his inspiration from nature, architecture and other makers. ‘I enjoy going to museums and galleries and studying all types of art, from pottery to modern art’. ‘I like fusing ideas from different mediums, disciplines and eras to create unique pieces of furniture’
To the work and effort that goes into each piece that leaves the workshop:
‘If there is a guiding principle to his work, it is about maintaining quality standards throughout each piece. ‘I take as much care on the unseen parts of the project as the seen,’ ‘I care about every aspect of the piece, and everything I make is built to the highest possible standards’.
A big part of the article is how we present our work online and how we use social media as an online portfolio, while simultaneously showing our clients what goes into their pieces.
‘I think it’s great for my clients to see how I build their furniture. This helps to build up a connection with their piece and hopefully give them insight into the work and that that has been put into their furniture’.
Also touched upon was Sean’s experience on ‘The Chop: Britain’s Top Woodworker’. This was a TV competition, shot in 2019, which pitted top makers from around the country against each other over nine rounds to find Britain’s top woodworker.
‘Each episode centred around a different historical era or theme, such as Victorian, gothic or maritime. In each one there was a group task, in which two teams had a day to build a specific piece within the theme, as well as a skills or technical challenge in which contestants had two hours to complete a set task, such as building a stool or a miniature model boat’.
Sean was still a full time student at this stage and was competing against full time woodworkers. The show was aired in 2020 on Sky History and was presented by Lee Mack, Rick Edwards, and William Hardy. Sean won this competition, to be crowed Britain’s top woodworker which was a fantastic achievement considering he was only 19 at the time!
