Longcase Clock

Introducing a very special, unique commission! We were asked to design a Longcase clock, often refered to as a 'Grandfather clock', that is distinctly modern while paying homage to classical, beautiful antique clocks with intricate detailing.

When designing this piece, we wanted to include intricate detailing. The back panel consists of a radial parquetry pattern, accented with string inlay. This panel is framed by a spiral mosaic made from around 13,000 little tiles of veneer. This same spiral mosaic borders the side panels, which feature stunning pomelle sapele, that has a beautiful natural ripple pattern. A brown-oak sunburst adorns the top and bottom panels.

We designed the dial to reflect the background panel, incorporating the same radial lines engraved into it. Classical elements include the split roof, inlays and detailed moulding wrapping around the clock. We used polished brass hinges and a lock on the large glass door to match the brass movement, which also complements the warm brown oak.

Our process

Commissioning a piece

Design

We strive to design and make bespoke, unique pieces of furniture, and everything begins with an initial consultation for us to understand what you are looking for. The project can be as much of a collaboration as you would like; we are happy to work with a specific brief and to involve you at every step, or alternatively we are happy designing a piece with creative freedom that we think would work perfectly in your space.

Sketches

Whether we are designing a new piece of furniture for your home, or undertaking a large refurbishment project, everything starts with a pencil sketch drawn by Sean. Paying close attention to the room, lighting and space, we will provide you with a design and choice of timber that we have carefully selected. Ultimately, what matters most to us is you fall in love with the design and we therefore will go through as many iterations as you like. Once we have finalised the design, we will present you with a watercolour painting of the piece.

Build

The piece will be hand-made in our workshop in Kent, using the best quality hand-tools and machinery, and finest levels of craftsmanship to ensure the piece will last for generations. During the making we will keep you updated with videos and pictures so you can see the piece come to life.

Delivery

We personally will deliver the piece to you, ensuring everything is in immaculate condition, along with providing advice on how to best care for your piece. If you are based outside of the UK, we use a trusted courier service.
